Lightweight, stable and elegant
A unique aesthetic
The platinum metal, rhodium, is named after the raw platinum ore from South America.
A coat of Black Rhodium
In the jewelry industry, there are hardly any pieces of jewelry that consist exclusively or predominantly of black rhodium. However, a rhodium-plated coat is often used with other metal alloys to increase their stability and hardness.
Aesthetic metallic shine
Through electroplating with a rhodium coating, the pieces of jewelry take on a silvery or a dark, anthracite-colored or black metallic shine. This aesthetic effect of the platinum metal is the main focus in jewelry making.
The unknown precious metal
Rhodium metal belongs to the platinum family and is less well known than other metals. Above all, the metal is used in the media and chemical industries.
Galvanic Rhodium Plating
The rare metal, rhodium, is about twice as common on Earth as osmium and four times as common as gold. In nature, however, it is mostly found alloyed with iridium or osmium. Deposits of the precious metal can be found, for example, in South America and Africa.
Process for coating with Black Rhodium
Thermal decomposition or electrodeposition are the most common methods for coating black rhodium.
Rhodium layers are used as contact layers for contacts in electronics, but especially for decorative purposes in the jewelry industry. This results in an elegant color tone with the “gray” rhodium color as the surface.
For subtle beauty:
In contrast to the others from the group of platinum metals, black rhodium plating results in a dark to gray-black layer. This is gloss-retaining and inspires with an extremely decorative color.
For robustness:
Black rhodium plating is used to obtain a dark anthracite layer, the hardness of which is the highest among the precious metals.
For contrast:
With the help of a rhodium electrolyte, ordinary metals or alloys can also be coated with a black gloss.
